Secrets. Everybody’s got their “secrets”. I’d scroll social media looking for SECRETS: the SECRET to staying physically healthy, the SECRET to getting your kids to in the right college, the SECRET to getting the laundry done … the SECRET to a … marriage that works. Then one day I realized something about myself... that in all my searching, I was really just searching for happiness. I just wanted to be able to say “I’m finally happy!” Don’t you feel that way? I’m sure I’m not alone.

And at the end of the day, when the kids are in bed and the laundry’s put away, and your watch says you’ve met your move goals, you’re still searching … still scrolling … for THAT secret to happiness. Can I tell you – I found it. IN a place I never expected to find it … and the best part … it was there the whole time, not in a magazine, not on social media, in fact, not a SECRET at all. I went with a friend, to church... on Easter. And that’s where I found it… The Secret to a Happy Life.

JOHN

Happiness. Hard to find. Hard to keep. See, it’s rough in the corporate world. Office drama, ruthless competition, you do your best and it never feels quite enough. Oh, they’ve done away with the big board rooms, suits and ties... but they’ll still walk right over you in their business casual loafers, yeah you better have a secret to success. But is that what life’s really all about? I thought I learned something BIG about myself when I realized the only reason I wanted to be successful... was so I could be happy. But then the thought occurred to me... what if happiness didn’t come from success? What if I finally unlocked the door to being “successful” only to find an empty room behind it?

I think it was 5 AM on a Monday. I’m on the elliptical at the gym, one of my colleagues is there working out next to me and I say, hey man, how do you do it? How do always seem so confident and stress free, and … happy, what’s your secret? He kinda laughs and says, John, it’s no secret at all. And he invites me to go with him to … church on Easter. And that’s where I discovered it: the secret to a Happy Life.

College. That’s what I thought would do the trick. I’d be the FIRST in my family to ever go to college. I knew that’s what my mom and dad wanted me to do – don’t get me wrong, I wanted it for myself too – but college represented so much more than just a degree or a job… it was everything. It was accomplishment, great new friends, an incredible boyfriend, and it was especially something that I knew would make my parents proud of me -- so I got it. I had an incredible college experience AND I got the degree. I graduated from college. I even got a new job that I never thought I’d be able to get so soon. So I guess you would say I had it ALL for someone my age…

But guess what? I still wasn’t happy. I was GLAD but not happy. I was glad I had what I had – I loved my friends, I loved my boyfriend, and I loved that my parents were proud of me… but there was still something missing. I’ll never when it all changed for me. My Tia had just moved here from Texas, and only been living here for a few months. One day she invited me to church with her. That’s when I found it… the secret to a HAPPY life.
